West Windsor, NJ – The ASA Brooklyn Avengers men's soccer team travelled to New Jersey today to play against ranked #9 team Mercer County Community College. The game started with the teams playing in 90-degree weather, but by the second half it turned into a downpour, with the temperature dropping over 20 degrees.
With a number of new players on the Avengers team, and quite a few who were playing their first game of the season, the team had to build chemistry quickly against a top ranked opponent. The Mercer had possession of the ball more than the Avengers in the first half, and the Avengers gave up a goal 15 minutes into the game. With 30 minutes already gone into the half, the Avengers had a defensive lapse where they gave up 2 goals within 2 minutes. Mercer led 3-0 at the end of the half.
With the first half gone by, the team displayed better chemistry in the second half. The improved chemistry combined with a change in formation, led to a much better half from the Avengers, even after a downpour in the second half. The Avengers gave up 1 goal with less than 14 minutes remaining in the second half to give Mercer a 4-0 win.
"It was a very good game," said men's soccer head coach Alphonse Prophete. "We played much better in the second half and I liked what I saw from our newcomers. We just need to be more aggressive defensively. Mercer's head coach used to play for me and I'm proud of what he's done with their team."
The ASA Brooklyn Avengers men's soccer team next plays their regional rivals Monroe Mustangs on October 12th 2019 at 7 pm.
