New Rochelle, NY – The ASA Brooklyn Avengers men's basketball team travelled to the 2019 Monroe Invitational to play against Harford Community College and Hagerstown Community College on November 22nd and 23 2019.
In the first game of the invitational, the ASA Brooklyn Avengers quickly came out swinging with a bucket and a pair of quick 3's to dictate the tone of the offense for the rest of the game while matching their intensity on the defensive end. Harford wasn't able to reach double digits on the scoreboard until there was 8:25 left in the 1st half. At the end of the first half, the Avengers led 46-23. In the second half, the Avengers continued their pace from their first half and the Avengers won the game 91-52.
In the second game, playing against Hagerstown Community College, the Avengers didn't come out with the same intensity as they did in the first game. A lack of energy from the Avengers and early foul trouble from the starters meant the reserves had to play heavy minutes in the first half. At the end of the first half, Hagerstown led the Avengers 43-32. The 11-point deficit was caused by being out-rebounded 22-14 and the Hagerstown made 9 more free throws than the Avengers. In the second half, the Avengers came out of the locker room with an emphasis on rebounds and defense, and the Avengers were able to overcome the double-digit lead and win the game 69-63. The Avengers out-rebounded Hagerstown 39-31.
In the second game, the Avengers had 4 players with double digit points. #11 Taron Loadholt was the leading scorer with 16 points including five 3-point baskets. #12 Harvin Mosquera had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds while #2 Jahmier Pugh had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.
"We're still a very young team, a lot of work to do but very pleased with the outcome," said Coach Martinez. "Anytime you win against a D1 team, you have to be happy."
The ASA Brooklyn Avengers men's basketball team next plays against Prestige Prep on November 26th, 2019 at home at Achievement First High School in Brooklyn, at 7:30 pm.
