ASA Brooklyn Avengers Football Team Scores Program High in Points While Shutting Out Hudson Valley

Troy, NY– The ASA Brooklyn Avengers football team travelled to Troy to play against Hudson Valley CC for their second game of the 2019 season.

The game started off slow for both teams in the first quarter, with passes getting intercepted by both teams in their first drive.  On the Avengers second drive, the Avengers scored their first touchdown of the game with a rushing play from #5 Tyquan Brown.  For Hudson Valley's next drive, they completed two complete passes to advance down the field.  However, the Avengers made a crucial defensive stop, a tackle for loss, that ended the drive's momentum.  The Avengers lead the first quarter, 7-0.

In the second quarter, the Avengers defense and offense fired on all cylinders.  A series of rushing plays from the Avengers offense gave them their 2ndtouchdown from #24 Stephon Rucker-Carroll. A pass interception from the Avengers defense paved the way for the offense to score their 3rdtouchdown from #11 Abdou Diop.  The Avengers sprinkled in their rushing game with passing plays for their 4thtouchdown from #2 Kaedin Robinson.  With less than 90 seconds left to go in the 2ndquarter, the Avengers defense was able to successfully stop Hudson Valley to allow the offense to score 2 more touchdowns, both from #4 Devin Dawkins. The Avengers lead at the half 42-0.

The Avengers momentum continued for the second half, with the offense continuing to generate touchdowns from Stephon Rucker-Carroll, Nasir Boykin, Andy Martin (2), Rovny DaSilva, Johntae McDowell, while the defense was able to shut-out Hudson Valley. This game marked the new football program high in points scored in a single game for the Avengers while being the first time the defense shut-out a team since September 2017.

Quotes from the team:

Defensive Coordinator, Lamarr Stewart: "We played hard, started off a little shaky in the 1stquarter, but we executed in the 2nd.  We played well, our team worked hard all week, and they deserved the victory."

Offensive Coordinator, Jason Depew: "Hudson Valley changed their formation in the front, but we made the right adjustments.  We came here and we wanted to run the ball and we were able to that successfully. We sprinkled our offense with passing plays and we executed.  We're still a very young team, but we played well, we just need to continue to learn from our mistakes."

Offensive Line Coach/Run-Game Coordinator, Vinnie Rizzo: "We were a little sloppy in the beginning, but we picked it up starting in the 2ndquarter.  We did what we were supposed to do, but we just need to minimize the amount of penalties we have.  We have Georgia Military College coming up next week, and we need to continue to keep getting better next week in order to get that victory against them.  Our kids have to be ready to play a full game next week. We're excited to see how good our team really is against Georgia Military."

Head Coach, Chris Calabrese: "The team did what they were supposed to do today.  We got a big game coming up next week against Georgia Military College. We just need to continue to get the players focused and ready to execute."

The ASA Brooklyn Avengers plays their first home game of the 2019 season against Georgia Military College on September 14th2019 at home in Aviator Sports Complex, Brooklyn, NY at 2 pm.
