BROOKLYN, NY --- When the ITA released its NJCAA national rankings this afternoon, the ASA Women's Tennis team joined the Avengers Men's team as the second-ranked team in the country.
The Lady Avengers earned the No. 2 ranking on the strength of their 8-4 overall record, which includes an eight-game winning and upsets of two Top-10 junior college teams, then-eighth ranked St. Petersburg and then-second ranked State College of Florida. ASA also sits atop the Region IV standings for NJCAA programs from the East.
The ranking is a great stepping stone as the program looks to improve on its third-place finish at the 2012 NJCAA Women's National Championships.
A pair of Lady Avengers - freshmen Dayana Agasieva & Diana Perez - also received rankings in the singles and doubles polls.
Name | National Ranking | Region IV Ranking |
Dayana Agasieva |
13 | 4 |
Diana Perez | 27 | 13 |
Agasieva/Perez | 21 | 6 |
As with the Men's team, the success of the Women's squad continues the upward trend of Avengers Athletics this year, as they join Football, Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Track, Baseball and Lacrosse as ASA teams with either national rankings or major national recognition.
