ASA Avengers Men's and Women's Soccer Team Travels to Essex for a Doubleheader

Essex, NJ – The ASA Avengers men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Essex County College for the second doubleheader of the season on September 15th 2018.  The women's team played the first game of the doubleheader while the men's team played the second game of the doubleheader.

The girls came out and played excellent the first 25 minutes of the game.  However, the women's soccer team made some mental lapses in the last 15 minutes to close out the first half.  "Unfortunately, in soccer a one minute lapse can cost you the game," said Women's Soccer Head Coach Jon Panella.  "I have to give the ladies credit for coming out the way they did and playing the way they did in the second half.  They didn't quit and I think we were a little unfortunate not to score more goals."

In the game the ASA Avengers women's soccer team scored their only point from Asako.  Asako made a goal from a quick combination play off a counter attempt and was assisted by Shonagh Cleary.  "I thought Asako and Maria (ASA's goalkeeper) were our two best players on the field," said Panella.  The score ended in a loss for the Avengers 1-4.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the ASA Avengers men's soccer team was held scoreless.  "We had a chance to take a look at a lot of our guys playing in different positions," said Men's Soccer Head Coach Brett Polow.  "It was a good test as we prepare for later in the season.  We controlled possession of the play of the game 70% of the time and we had quite a few chances.  However, we simply just couldn't finish.  We made five bad mistakes in the back, and unfortunately all five mistakes led to a goal."

ASA Avengers women's soccer team plays next at September 22nd 2018 at Montgomery College in Maryland while the ASA Avengers men's soccer team plays at home against Ulster County Community College in Aviator Center, Brooklyn, New York.
