Yesterday, the NJCAA announced their selections for the women's soccer All-American class of 2017. Three of ASA Brooklyn's soccer players were named All-Americans. Tamara Queiroz and Sara Suarez were both named as First Team All-Americans along with Kaylane Alves who was named an Honorable Mention.
QUOTEABLE: "I'm happy for the accomplishments by Tamara, Sara, and Kaylane, but I'm prouder for all the ladies on our team for buying into what we stand for," said Head Coach Brett Polow. "Without this team of players, these accomplishments wouldn't be possible. Having three All-Americans in one season is an honor for our program, and all of our ladies will share this moment as a testament to the hard work they've all put in."
All three girls were also named to the All-Tournament team at the national championship.
- Kaylane Alves (1 Goal, 3 Assists)
- Sara Suarez Quevedo (3 Goals, 1 Assist)
- Tamara Queiroz (4 Goals, 2 Assists)
Queiroz led all Avengers with 19 goals and 13 assists throughout the season, in only 13 games played. She now is a two-time First Team All-American dating back to 2015 when she was named the National Tournament Player of the Year in 2015 with Iowa Central. During her two National Championship runs, Queiroz led the tournament in scoring both times. Off the field, Queiroz is a two-time Dean's List award recipient and is on pace to graduate Summa Cum Laude.
Sara Suarez was the third highest goal scorer for the Avengers with 14 goals scored on the season along with eight assists. Suarez was also named to the First Team All-Region for her second time this season. Suarez is a four-time Dean's List Award recipient and is on pace to graduate Magna Cume Laude. Additionally, she is on pace to receive Academic All-American honors. She is Division I eligible set to graduate in May of 2018.
Alves was tied as the second leading assister this season for the Avengers with nine in ten games played. She was a versatile asset to the Avengers this season playing every minute of every game this season including appearances at every position excluding goalkeeper. With the nomination this year, Alves received First Team All-Region honors for the second time. Alves is also Division I eligible and is on pace to graduate in January 2019.
Quieroz, Suarez and Alves led the Avengers through an undefeated 9-0 regular season, a district championship and a run into the finals of the National Championship. The Avengers were delivered their first loss of the season in the National Championship game against Tyler Junior College.
The Avengers finished the season as the #6 ranked team in the country, tying their highest ranking in program history. During the regular season ASA defeated #10 ranked Monroe College and #6 ranked Monroe Community College. In the national tournament, ASA defeated the #3 ranked Laramie County in pool play and #1 seeded Phoenix College in the semi-finals. This was the Lady Avengers first national tournament appearance.
