Ilana Mendonca set the table early for the ASA women's soccer team, and Sarah Dinert took care of the rest, as the Lady Avengers took care of business in a thrilling 1-0 win over rival Monroe College in the Region XV Championship, Friday, at Brooklyn's Aviator Sports Complex.
Mendonca, a sophomore forward, registered the lone goal of the contest at the 7:03 mark to provide the winning margin.
The tally was unassisted, but it was noted that the scoring chance was created by the seamless passing of a couple of ASA's top players – Mendonca and fellow sophomore Fabiana Miguel.
"Ilana's goal was early on off a great pass in transition," head coach Brett Polow deemed. "All season they've been combining for quality goals, so it was no surprise they connected for the tally."
Following Mendonca's go-ahead goal, it was an intense grind for both teams that featured 26 total fouls and six yellow cards.
Polow appreciated the way his team battled and withstood Monroe's furious charges.
"Monroe is a physical team that plays very direct," Polow said. "But we possess some high-quality technical players and just grinded them [Monroe] down, today. We didn't give up too much defensively, so it was very difficult for them to penetrate through with quality chances."
And even when the Lady Mustangs were able to create rare space and opportunities, the Lady Avengers (9-0-2) were backed by the stellar play of Dinert. The freshman stopped six shots for her eighth clean slate of the season.
"The back four and keeper kept it very tight," beamed Polow.
There's undoubtedly unbridled joy right now on the Brooklyn campus, but there won't be much more time to revel in the spoils, as the Lady Avengers will soon gear up to face Community College of Rhode Island, Sunday.
"We're enjoying tonight, but we're eager to back on the field," Polow reasoned. "Happy times right now, though."
