The ASA Lady Avengers are on the verge of capturing the Region XV Division-1 championship, following a thrilling 1-1 tie, Wednesday night.
ASA (8-0-2) is currently ranked 9th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and will be hosting the squad that tied them the previous night, the 6th-ranked Monroe Lady Mustangs.
If Friday's Region XV title match is anything like Wednesday's tilt at Monroe (9-0-3), then soccer fanatics in attendance will be in for a treat. The double-overtime affair ended with 22 combined shots (11 apiece), 18 corner kicks (nine apiece), and 34 fouls, as these rivals got after each other for the full 110 minutes. ASA had three yellow cards, while Monroe had one.
The intensity was top-flight, as well as the goaltending efforts by both teams. Monroe's Marta Alemany registered three saves (four shots on goals), while she was one-upped by stellar freshman netminder Sarah Dinert, who stopped five shots (six shots on goal).
Scoring was at a premium -- as it always has been any time these teams meet -- as it was the second-straight time that their match ended in a tie. The previous was a 0-0 tilt on September 30. The only time either gained an actual victory was ASA's 4-0 beating at Monroe on August 26.
Wednesday's tilt only saw minimal scoring, but the goals were clutch. Monroe kicked it off by netting a goal by Elysa Virela in the 54th minute, off an assist from Gabrielle Periera. Ilana Mendonca squared it up for ASA in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal.
Friday's matchup -- 1 p.m. at Aviator Sports Complex -- should feature much of the same intensity in this winner-take-all tilt.
