The ASA Lady Avengers picked up a tough 5-2 win over SUNY Broome Community Colllege, on Saturday, in Broome County's Binghamton, New York.
It was arguably the toughest matchup for ASA (6-0) since a 3-1 win over Schoolcraft College on August 28, as the match was actually tied at halftime, 1-1. The Lady Avengers have managed to blow out most of their opponents so far this season, with an average score of 6-2, but the Hornets were a feisty bunch that wouldn't relent.
There were 20 combined fouls -- 15 by SUNY -- as well as two yellow cards and a post-match red card doled out to the Hornets that signified the tough and physical nature of the contest.
The sixth-ranked Lady Avengers weren't able to fully pull away until the 65th minute when Ilana Mendonca registered her second of three goals to give ASA the lead for good. Mendonca buried three goals at the 1:13, 48:00, and 65:00 marks -- and they all were needed, as SUNY actually took a rare lead on Kaelyn Michitti's go-ahead goal at 45:29.
Thankfully for ASA, they managed to rally and take command of the contest in the latter stages. Sarah Suarez and Fabiana Miguel Dos Rios also added a goal apiece, as the duo also combined for arguably the prettiest goal of the match. Miguel Dos Rios netted the final goal of the contest on a one-touch tally, following successful one-timer passes from Suarez and Reny Farfan.
The ASA Lady Avengers are on a roll that is unmatched by most of the teams today. Up next is a Tuesday road tilt with Brookdale Community College, at 1 p.m.
