BROOKLYN, NY --- Following another banner year for ASA Women's Basketball, the Lady Avengers have secured the first four-year scholarship for one of its sophomores.
Point guard Shaquita Smith, who transferred to ASA for the 2012-13 campaign, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Utah State University.
Smith was a dynamic floor general who set the tone for the Lady Avengers backcourt all season with her intensity and aggressive play. The Buffalo, New York native played in 27 of 29 games (with 21 starts) and averaged 11.7 points, 4.6 rebounds & 4.6 assists per game.
Smith logged double figure scoring outputs in 15 games, including four 20-point contests and a school-record 30 points in the Lady Avengers' first-ever NJCAA Division I Women's National Championship tournament game, a March 19 victory over Western Nebraska Community College.
Utah State, led by second-year Head Coach Jerry Finkbeiner, completed the 2012-13 campaign with a 18-14 record and finished with a 14-4 mark in Western Athletic Conference play - good enough for second place in the league. The Aggies advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament and received an invitation to the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) Tournament.
USU will begin competing in the Mountain West Conference during the 2013-14 season.
Smith's signing gives ASA its eight NCAA Division I signee in program history and 14th NCAA signee overall.
