BRONX, NY --- Before ASA College and Monroe Community College play the biggest matchup in their series history - a second straight District C semifinal in March - the Lady Avengers sent a clear message to the Lady Tribunes.
ASA is looking like the team to beat in the District.
Sophomore guard Shaquita Smith scored a game-high 20 points to lead ASA (17-3) to a 69-52 victory over her former program on Saturday afternoon. The win was ASA's seventh straight and the first in seven attempts (1-6) for ASA over Monroe CC (18-5).
Smith nailed five of ASA's seven three-pointers in the game and added seven rebounds & four assists in the game.
Sophomore Sashana Bucknor added to her long list of double-double games, joining Smith in double figures with 12 and pulling down 14 rebounds. Bucknor has now recorded a double-double in 11 of her 20 games this season.
The active Lady Avengers defense held MCC to its worst field goal percentage and second-worst three point percentage of the season. The Lady Tribunes shot 12-for-20 (20.0%) from the floor and 2-for-18 (11.1%) from behind the arc.
