Lady Avengers Knock Off #25 Harford Behind Castro's 23
BEL AIR, MD --- Thursday's game between ASA College and Harford Community College brought long winning streaks, nationally recognized teams and a possible preview of the District C title game to a head.
The game lived up to its hype and then some.
Led by a career-high 23 points from freshman guard Kelcey Castro, ASA (16-3) pulled the road upset over 25th-ranked Harford (18-2), 72-64. The win was ASA's first over a ranked Division I opponent and third overall against a ranked team in any NJCAA division.
ASA extended its current win streak to six games while snapping Harford's streak at ten games.
Castro shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from three-point range (7-for-16 overall) and 5-for-6 from the free throw line to best her previous high of 20 points set on December 8th against Genesee CC. She scored 16 of her 23 in the second half, including three of her four threes.
Joining Castro in double figures were sophomore forwards Tiffany Jones & Sashana Bucknor and sophomore guard Jade Wharton. Jones (15 pts/15 reb) and Bucknor (13 pts/11 reb) each recorded double doubles, while Wharton finished with ten points and six rebounds.
The battle between the two District rivals was tight from the outset, with four ties in the first 10:56 of the first half. After a pair of Jones free throws tied the game at 13-13 with 9:04 remaining, ASA would outscore Harford 21-12 the rest of the way to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.
The Lady Avengers' lead would balloon to as much as 16 (47-31) over the opening 6:26 of the second period. However, as indicative of their name, the Owls fought back with a 24-3 run of their own to jump ahead of ASA, 55-50, with 7:32 to go in the half. ASA would quickly tie the contest again, 57-57, with 5:39 left in the game and Jones would put ASA ahead for good on a layup with 4:39 remaining.
ASA is off until next week, when the Lady Avengers will host their District C semifinal opponent, Monroe Community College on Saturday, February 2nd. The game is scheduled for 3:00 PM at Gauchos Gym in the Bronx.
