NEW ROCHELLE, NY --- The ASA Women's Basketball team made its latest trip north to New Rochelle one to remember.
And it was done in surprisingly easy fashion.
Led by 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists from sophomore guard Shaquita Smith, the Lady Avengers took down the D-II #15 Lady Mustangs 78-53 on Tuesday evening. The victory was the first-ever for ASA (14-3) at the Monroe Athletic Center and first road win in the series since breaking Monroe's (12-4) 59-game home win streak in 2009-10, when Monroe played its home games at Mount St. Vincent.
ASA's defense paved the way for a pull-away win, holding Monroe to its lowest scoring total of the season (53) by limiting the Mustangs to 23.8% (19-for-80) shooting, including 10.3% (3-for-29) from three-point range.
ASA won every key battle on its way to its fourth straight victory:
- Rebounds: 61-51
- Assists: 21-15
- Turnovers: 15-18
- Points Off TOs: 22-10
- Second Chance Points: 20-18
- Bench Points: 27-24
Sophomores Tiffany Jones and Jade Wharton reached double figures along with Smith. Jones finished her ninth double-double of the year (13 pts, 17 reb), while Wharton notched her fourth straight game - and eighth overall - in double digits with 12.
ASA used a 17-7 run in the first eight minutes of the half to blow the game open and extended their lead to 17 by halftime, 42-25. ASA's lead ballooned to 30 with 12:46 remaining in the second half, 58-28.
The Lady Avengers are off until Friday, January 18th, when they travel back to West Point for a rematch with Army JV. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
