Late Surge Pushes Lady Avengers Past Harford, 50-37
BROOKLYN, NY --- Two night after a stellar, 30-point victory over one Maryland opponent, ASA found itself in an all-out battle against the other.
It wasn't pretty, but the Lady Avengers found a way to win once again.
Sophomore center Brittany Webb (New York, NY) recorded team-highs with nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as ASA (18-1) prevailed over Harford Community College (10-13), 50-37, on Monday night at St. Francis College.
The Lady Avengers's rare off shooting night (19-for-73/26.0%) contributed to a back-and-forth contest that saw eight ties and six lead changes in the first 33 minutes of the game. However, when it mattered most, ASA's sophomores answered the call.
With the game tied at 35-35, ASA would close out the game with a 15-2 run. Webb paced the team, scoring two baskets and converting on two free throws during the stretch. Guard Ashley Watson (Detroit, MI) added three points to the run, and guards Latasia Ward (Bronx, NY) & Cristal Liriano (New York, NY), along with forward Tanikqua McFarlane (Queens, NY) scored two points apiece.
ASA's defensive energy set the stage for the decisive run. Overall, the Lady Avengers won the rebounding battle, forced four more turnovers, grabbed five more steals and blocked five more shots than Harford.
Futuremore, every Lady Avenger that entered the game - eleven in total - scored at least one field goal. Freshman wing Sashana Bucknor (New Haven, CT) continued her solid play, contributing seven points, six rebounds, and two blocks in the game. Four players finished with six points - Watson, Ward and freshmen Jade Wharton (Wilmington, DE) & Deborah Anderson (Tacoma,WA).
With the win, ASA has put together matching nine-game winning streaks and surpassed last year's program record for wins in a season (17).
Harford was led by Kourtney Orr's double double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Avengers are back in action Thursday, February 2 as they travel with the Men's Basketball team to Essex CC for a 5pm (Women) and 7pm (Men) doubleheader in Newark, NJ.
