NJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Plano, TX----"ASA! ASA! ASA" was the final chant of the 2015 men's tennis season as the ASA College Avengers won their second NJCAA Division I National Championship in a row.
The title wrapped up a week of strong tennis played by the Avengers who advanced to at least the semifinals in every flight in both singles and doubles, and eight of nine National Championship matches. ASA would end up winning three of six singles national titles, and make a clean sweep of all three doubles titles.
Heading into the final day, the Avengers sported a comfortable four point lead at first place, needing only two finals wins to win back-to-back team titles, which was secured after freshman Callum Poland-Smith and sophomore Stephen Watson won the National Championship in Flight 1 and Flight 3 respectively. Tyler JC who would find themselves in second place, needed win all five final matches they participated in including four matches against the Avengers. TJC only managed to in two of their finals appearances.
The Avengers totaled 50 points for the entire tournament, giving them a landslide victory over the rest of the pack. Tyler was the runner-up with 43 team points and ABAC finished third with 33 points.
The ASA College tennis program now has four NJCAA Division I national titles under their belt between the women's program who also repeated as national champions last week, and the men's team with Head Coach, Brian Slack, at the helm of both teams.
Following the men's tournament, Coach Slack would go on to say, "Repeating as national champs on both sides isn't an easy feat, but both teams were extremely determined to get it done. I would like to thank ASA College especially ASA president Alex Shchegol and the administration for their support. Without a lot of people's help and hard work, none of this would be possible. As a program, we look forward to continue to make everyone proud to be an Avenger!"
