Men's Soccer Moves Up To #15, Sweeps Globe In Region XV Action
BROOKLYN, NY --- The ASA Men's Soccer team, fresh off of moving up to #15 in the NJCAA national poll, recorded a second 6-0 shutout over Region XV opponent Globe Institute on Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Avengers to 12-1-2 overall and 3-0 in regional play.
The #15 ranking improves on the program-high position ASA has achieved during the 2012 season.
The final game of the season between the two teams played out very similar to the first, with ASA scoring three goals in each half and dominating the overall pace of the game.
ASA got on the board first in the 10th minute on a header by sophomore Dorado Phipps on a quarter-field assist by sophomore Jose Herrera. Herrera would get in on the scoring action after Phipps' goal, starting in the 19th minute. Herrera put in a strike off a set kick on the right side of the box, making the score, 2-0. Herrera would add ASA's third goal in the 31st minute as the speedy striker took a pass from the left wing, eluded a defender, and used some nifty ball movement to send his shot to the back of the net and give ASA its 3-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Avengers would start quicker than they did in the first. Sophomore Franck Praudel would score three minutes into the half (48') as he attempted a shot from the right side of the pitch of an Emmanuel Nunez pass. The ball sailed high and went right over the Globe goalie's hands and into the net to give ASA a 4-0 lead. Goal number five would come ten minutes later (58') on an excellent Kareem Kennedy-to-Dorado Phipps connection. Kennedy sent a through ball ahead of a streaking Phipps, who jetted past two Globe defenders and beat the goalie to the left side of the goal.
The final score of the match was actually an own goal off a Kennedy shot in the 75th minute, which a Globe defender initially stopped but could not completely control.
The victory sets up a Region XV clinching game between ASA and Monroe College on Saturday, October 27th at City Park in New Rochelle, NY. A win or tie would give ASA its first regional championship and send the Avengers to the Northeast District tournament, which it would host on November 3-4.
