Men's Lacrosse Fights Off Suffolk For Region XV Title Berth

BROOKLYN, NY --- Hosting its first Region XV playoff game in its second season of NJCAA competition, the ASA College Men's Lacrosse team earned a milestone 17-11 victory over #7 Suffolk Community College on Tuesday evening at Aviator Sports Complex.

The Avengers, the #2 seed in the Region, came out on fire against the #3 seed Sharks. ASA sprinted out to a 4-0 first period lead behind goals from freshman Casey Gibson (13:32), sophomore Casey Jackson (12:15, 11:12) and freshman Richard Tagliagambe (9:01). However, the experience of Suffolk would allow them to settle in and go on a 5-0 run of their own and take a 5-4 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams would exchange a pair of goals - sophomore Brandon Goodwin netted both goals for ASA - but Suffolk would add a third late to go into halftime with an 8-6 advantage.

ASA would turn the tide in their favor in the third, outscoring the Sharks 4-2 in the quarter behind Goodwin (13:34, 7:52), Jackson (10:45) and freshman Joe Granata (4:26) to tie the game at 10-10.

As the fourth quarter began and the score knotted at 11-11, the Avengers took hold of the game for good. A Suffolk slashing penalty with 7:46 to go in the game helped spark a final 6-0 run by ASA to put the game out of reach. Jackson scored three of the six goals, Tagliagambe scored two and Granata add one.

Overall, Goodwin finished with nine points (4 G, 5 A), Jackson had eight (6 G, 2 A), Tagliagambe added five points (3 G, 2 A) and Granata (2 goals), Gibson (1 G, 1 A) and sophomore Coltin Borthwick (1 G, 1 A) each netted two apiece.

ASA is now 1-1 overall in Region XV playoff games all-time and will take on Nassau Community College on Saturday, April 27th at 7:00 PM at Nassau CC for the Region XV championship. The winner will represent the Region in the six-team NJCAA National Championship in May.
