NEW YORK, NY --- ASA Men's Lacrosse scored its third straight victory and fourth in five games with a 14-6 win over Columbia University.
The Avengers' night began much like their previous game against Fordham, with Jackson leading a five-goal first period for ASA as the team took a 5-1 lead over the Lions. Jackson scored or assisted on four of the team's goals, with freshman Antonie Williams scoring the other unassisted. Borthwick and Goodwin each scored a goal and Goodwin added an assist.
The second quarter proved to be more wide open, as six different Avengers lit up the scoreboard in the period. Jackson, Borthwick and freshmen Tom Hamlet, Major Livingston, Richard Tagliagambe, & Jeremy Wiley found the back of the net to give ASA a 11-3 halftime cushion.
The teams played to a low-scoring second half tie (3-3) but the needed separation was already in place for the Avengers.
Goalie Kyle Hubbard played well for ASA, making nine saves and allowing four goals in 45 minutes. Sophomore Raymond McClough stepped between the pipes for the first time as an Avengers to provide some relief for Hubbard as sophomore Blake Duncan recovers from injury. McClough only allowed a pair of goals and recorded four saves in 15 minutes of action.
With a current record of 9-4, the Avengers are assured of the program's first winning season in its second year of NJCAA competition. The Avengers have two more regular season games remaining - a Region XV matchup at first-place Nassau and the home finale against Del Tech - before the Region XV Playoffs.
If ASA advances out of the Region, the team one of the five automatic bids to the newly expanded, six-team NJCAA Lacrosse Championship.
