COLUMBIA, MD --- After defeating CCBC-Catonsville on Saturday, ASA Lacrosse set its sights on pulling a major upset as they made the short drive to play #8 Howard CC on Sunday.
And while the Avengers (6-6) fell by a slim 23-22 margin to the Dragons, their overall performance was to be commended.
Freshman attack Casey Jackson (British Columbia) finished with an astonishing 11 goals and three assists in the game, giving him totals of 65 goals (1st nationally), 30 assists (11th) and 95 points (3rd) on the season.
Fueled by Jackson, ASA gave Howard all it could handle the entire game. The Avengers jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game. After falling behind 7-3 to end the first quarter, ASA used an 8-3 second quarter to take an 11-10 advantage into halftime.
The back and forth pace would continue, as Howard would go on a 10-4 run, leading 20-15 after the third frame. In the fourth, it was ASA's turn to get hot, doubling up Howard 6-3 to pull within two, 23-21, with under a minute remaining. ASA would score again with 12 seconds remaining to pull within one, 23-22.
After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Avengers ran out of steam and couldn't get a clean shot off as time expired.
Fellow Canadians Ryan Watson (five goals, three assists), Brandon Goodwin (one goal, six assists) and Coltin Borthwick (two goals, three assists), as well as freshman Hunter Curran (Virginia Beach, VA; three goals, one assist) also had stellar games.
ASA gets right back to action this week with games against Nassau CC on Wednesday, April 25 and Dean College on Saturday, April 28. Both games are on the road at 7pm and 2pm, respectively.
