Dundalk, Maryland -- The ASA Avengers men's basketball team travels to the Dundalk Mixer to open their 2018 NJCAA regular season.
On November 2nd, 2018 the Avengers played their first game of the season against the host team, the Dundalk Lions. The Avengers won the game 68-61. "It was a dogfight," says Avengers men's basketball head coach, Devonne Martinez. "It's understandable since they were trying to protect home court. Our defense was alright and our offense wasn't as fluid as we wanted them to be since we were still learning how to play with each other. However, we fought hard and we came out victorious."
The second game of the weekend was on November 3rd, 2018 against the Pitt CC Bulldogs was with a win of 68-65. "Pitt CC played hard and they gave themselves a chance to win. We didn't play as good as we should've as a unit, but we stayed the course. We still aren't as cohesive as we would like to be but we made some key plays at the end to pull it out and that's why we were victorious."
The final game was against Cecil College on November 4th, 2018 where the Avengers won 82-77 where we came out and play the best game of the mixer. At one point, the Avengers were up 15 in the first half. In the second half, Cecil turned up the defense and ASA was somewhat flustered by the defensive pressure. ASA was able to hold off the run and manage to win the game. "Offense was great in the first half. The players were unselfish and moved the ball. Defensively, we were great the first half and good the second half."
Prior to the mixer, the Avengers only had one scrimmage. The team got better throughout the weekend as the players got more experience with each other. Over the mixer, the leading scorer was #15 center, Miguel Simon, with 18.7 ppg and #11 shooting guard, Travon Brown, with 4 rpg.
