Men's Basketball Set To Play In District III Championship

Brooklyn, N.Y. -  The ASA Avengers men's basketball team will be playing for the District III Championship and a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament. The Region XV Champion Avengers (12-12) are coming off a 71-65 victory over the Monroe College Mustangs. Their opponent will be the Baltimore City College Panthers (20-11), champions of Region XX.

The Avengers got off to a strong start this season, winning their first 6 games. After going through a rough patch in the season, they have seemed to regain their early season success when they rallied to win the Region XV Championship. The ASA men's basketball team is led by several players including freshman guard Joshua Hightower (Cooksville, MD) who was named Region XV Tournament MVP and also was named to the All-Region team. Freshman guard Jose Pabon (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) who was also named to the All-Region team. The Avengers leading scorer is freshman guard/forward Robert Terrero (Washington Heights, N.Y.) who averages 16.3 points per game.

These teams have met once before this season when the Panthers escaped with a 72-69 win over the Avengers. ASA was outshot 41% to 35.2% from the field and were outscored in the paint 46-32. Freshmen Robert Terrero and Joshua Hightower led the Avengers in scoring with 17 and 16 points a piece. In this matchup,  ASA will look to lock down the Panthers by carrying over the strong defense that they showed in the Region XV championship.

The Distrcit III Championship will be played on Friday March 9th at 8:00pm at St. Joseph's College.
