Top Seeded Avengers Advance To Region XV Division I Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY ---The #1 seeded ASA men's basketball team came back in the final eight minutes to defeat #4 Westchester 73-69 tonight in the semifinals of the Region XV-Division I tournament.  The Avengers will take on the 2nd seeded Monroe Mustangs in the finals tomorrow, March 3rd.  It is the fourth time in five years the teams will meet in the championship game.

With 8:30 remaining in the game, Westchester took a 58-47 lead on a Jamell Walker fast-break dunk.  However, like they have done so all season long, the Avengers would dig deep, to make a run to turn the fate of the contest around.  Sparked by an "and-one'' lay-in by sophomore guard Daquan Brickhouse, the Avengers would find themselves down by single digits again with 7:01 remaining in game.  On the next possession, sophomore forward Victor Ljuljdjuraj stole the ball at mid-court leading to a Micqueel Martin dunk.  After a Viking timeout, Ljuljdjuraj cut the Westchester lead to 60-55 on a lay-in with 4:45 to go.  After another defensive stop, Brickhouse would get fouled, make the first of two frewe-throws, miss the second and then put-back the miss on a floater in the lane cutting the Viking lead to two with 4:19 remaining in the contest.  After losing the lead 63-61 on an ASA "and-one" lay-up by Quillar Marion, Westchester would retake the lead with a Tahj Vines three-point field goal.  ASA's Micqueel Martin on the next possession drilling a three of his own from the corner for the 66-64 lead.  With :59 to go, Westchester would have the lead for the last time after being down four, hitting another Vines' three, and making two Walker foul shots.  Down by one, Brickhouse, would earn another star in the game making the pull-up jumper for the 70-69 lead and then stealing the ball with :10 to go getting fouled in the process.  He would calmly knock down both shots from the charity stripe.  Westchester's last attempt failed.

Daquan Brickhouse led all scorers with 19.  Marion was a force off of the bench adding 13 points and eight rebounds.  The Vikings were led by Damien Davis' 18 points and seven rebounds.

The championship game will be played at 5:00 PM at New Roc City in New Rochelle. For information on taking the Fan Bus to the game or watching live online, click HERE.
