Football Holds On at Monroe

New Rochelle, NY--The ASA College football team won their conference opener this evening at Monroe, 24-21.  ASA improves to 2-1 with the victory.  The Avengers have a bye next weekend and will host fellow NEFC member, Dean College, on Sunday, October 5th at Aviator Sports Complex (Brooklyn, NY).

With the Mustangs threatening to take the lead all night long, the Avengers would give themselves the breathing room they needed with almost nine minutes remaining in game.  Sophomore quarterback, Angelo Nocciolo, would find sophomore tail back, Joseph Williams, streaking down the left side of the field for a 43-yard touchdown reception.  Williams surpassed 100 all-purpose yards for his third game in a row, finishing with 104 on the ground and 93 yards receiving.

Monroe would make things interesting in the final three minutes of the game.  With 2:21 left, Monroe would force a safety on a botched ASA punt snap that went into the back of the end zone.  The Mustangs would then run a 69-yard return on the ensuing kickoff to the end zone to cut the ASA lead to 24-21 with 2:09 remaining in the game.  However, the Avengers would secure the onside kick at mid-field to end any chances of the Mustangs' complete comeback.

ASA struck first at the end of the first quarter on a Nocciolo pass to freshman running back Deion Tidwell for 32 yards to end zone.  Monroe tied the game with just under ten minutes left in the first half, capping a 77-yard drive.

ASA took the lead going into the break on a 40-yard field goal by sophomore kicker, Matt Freixa

The Avengers added to their lead with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter on a quarterback sneak by Nocciolo.  The sneak was set-up by a 24-yard rush by Tidwell on the previous play.

Monroe answered on their next possession with 2:57 left in the third quarter, shortly before the action-filled final quarter.

Five different Avengers finished with sacks. Sophomore linebacker, Tremaine Brock, led the Avengers with seven tackles.
