Brooklyn, NY---The ASA College baseball team who recently won their fourth Region XV championship in a row had eight sudent-athletes named to the All-Region XV Division I team. Pitcher Placido Torres would take home Player of the Year honors.
Placido Torres (Player of the Year)- The freshman lefty from New Jersey couldn't have had a better rookie season for the Avengers. He would finish the 2013 season with a 7-2 record in ten starts. Sporting a 18th best in the nation 1.62 ERA, Torres led the region with 70 strikeouts. Always capable of going tuhe distance, Torres would pitch five complete games. He is the third ASA pitcher in a row to win the award.
Alex Echevarria- The freshman center fielder from Florida had a solid rookie campaign in the field and at the plate. He would finish with the third best batting average on the team hitting .395 for the season. He'd finish second on the team with 38 RBIs and tied for best with 12 doubles. He also led the region in hits with 58. Making a lot of tough plays looking easy in the outfield, he would put out 92 and assisted on five.
Carlos Tejeda- The lanky hard-throwing righty showed plenty of potential this season for the Avengers. The Santo Domingo native won every start finishing with a 7-1 record. He would finish with the second highest ERA on the staff at 2.25 and second in strikeouts with 37.
Eduin Valdez- The freshman third baseman was reliable as any Avenger at the plate this season. He would finish third best on the team with a .410 batting average and second best with a .562 slugging percentage.
George Kantizian- The sophomore catcher finished his lone season with the Avengers with impressive all-around numbers. He would bat .378 along with leading the team with 149 put outs. He would throw out ten runners trying to steal.
Gilberto Mendoza- The freshman shortstop from Staten Island should only get better after a solid season. He would finish fourth on the team with 41 hits for a .376 batting average. In the field, he would finish third on the team with 39 assists.
Julio Ovalles- The sophomore utility man for the Avengers produced at a number positions when his name was called. Ovalles led the team with a .419 batting average on 86 at bats. In the field he would finish top five on the team with 104 put outs with a .931 fielding percentage.
Kevin Victoriano- The freshman offensive stud for the Avengers led the team and region in a number of categories this season. Victoriano led Region XV in doubles with 12, homeruns with five, runs-batted-in with 46, and stolen bases with 23. He also led ASA with a .623 slugging percentage.
Francisco Perez (Coach of the Year)- The first and only baseball coach at ASA, Perez led the Avengers to a historical season. The Avengers recorded the most wins in program history with 35 this season, advancing to the Eastern District championship second round. ASA would also receive their first ever national ranking in the April 9th NJCAA poll, checking in at #17. The Avengers would also go into the Districts nationally ranked at #20, a great feat for a northeast school. ASA has won four of the last five Region XV titles. The program played its first season in 2009.
