New Rochelle, NY----The ASA College baseball team took the second game of a five-game regular season series with fellow region member Monroe College this afternoon 5-3. The Avengers improve to 22-6 with the victory and 2-0 in Region XV-Division I play with both wins coming against Monroe.
Scoreless through the first three innings of the game, Monroe would strike first on an Omar Cuevas sacrifice fly to bring Rafael Balado home after he had tripled to start the inning. ASA starting pitcher Hector Perez would gather himself and get two straight outs to limit the deficit to one.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, ASA would respond by tying the game with an Eduardo Familia run on a passed ball on an Eduin Valdez walk. Shortstop Gilberto Mendoza would move Valdez over to second with a single. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Valdez would score for the 2-1 lead on a Julio Ovalles ground-out to first.
Monroe did not go down quietly, retaking the lead 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. The lead would not go into the seventh as ASA would answer with three runs of their own. Kevin Victoriano and George Kantz walked to start the inning. Eduin Valdez would drive them home for the winning runs with a triple. Valdez scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Julian Lanfranco.
Freshman pitcher Ryan Cabreja took over for ASA in the top of the seventh inning and pitched three no-hit innings of baseball. It was his second day of tremendous work in a row.
