The ASA Avengers' 2017 football schedule was announced and on it were some of the region's heavy hitters – including a date with ASA Miami, that'll sure rile up both campuses leading up to that week.
But for an Avengers squad that is coming off a 4-6 season, last year, they welcome the competition. Perhaps it's because second-year head coach Joe Osovet's crew ended the season on a two-game winning streak by averaging a whopping 75 points per game.
During ASA's four victories, the offense was in its highest gear averaging 60.5 points per conquest. It was a banner season for the Avengers offense, not bad for a team having to get used to an entirely different offensive scheme in Osovet's multiple look spread playbook. Osovet came over from rival Nassau Community College, last season, where the Lions were annually one of the best offensive teams in the country. He quickly turned the Avengers into a high-scoring team that can play with anyone.
Year 2 for him at the Brooklyn campus should garner even better results. And by the early looks of things, Osovet reasoned this could be his most explosive outfit yet.
"We've got our guys in here and changed the culture," Osovet said about his second-year offense. "We can be better than any team I coached at Nassau, including the 2014 squad."
That Nassau team enjoyed a Valley of the Sun Bowl victory and entered the following season ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) preseason poll. ASA hasn't reached that lofty status yet, but Osovet wouldn't be surprised if this batch of Avengers can eventually enjoy similar success by year's end.
"I'm excited to watch this group. They have done everything that we have asked of them and really put in the work to be successful, both on and off the field," Osovet said, adding the talent pool is deep on the Brooklyn roster. "From a talent standpoint, this is the most talented group that I have ever been associated with in my coaching career."
ASA and Osovet are hoping, rather, they're confident, all the hard work and infusion of talent will add lots more wins to the left-hand column.
