The ASA baseball season came to an end just 10 days ago. And while the ultimate goal was not met, their campaign was not short on accolades and personal achievements.
The Avengers (24-22-1) finished the season winners in eight of its last 11 outings, and boasted several individual honors as they entered into a riveting five-game series against rival Monroe College in the Region XV playoffs. Eight Avengers made the All-Region squad, led by shortstop Miguel Medina and starting pitcher Luis Sanchez Tejada – both of whom are All-American candidates.
Medina batted .455 on the season, to go with three homers, 49 RBIs, 39 runs, and eight stolen bases (without being caught). Sanchez Tejada had a team-high seven wins against just two losses. He yielded 18 runs (just eight earned), allowed 30 hits, struck out 85 (an astounding 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings), had a .148 opposing batting average, and a microscopic 1.24 ERA in 58 innings pitched.
The aforementioned duo weren't the only supreme players on an Avengers squad that provided a .308 collective batting average and averaged 6.87 runs per game. Catcher Eurick Perez (.345 batting average, three homers, 23 RBIs, 39 runs, 12 steals), first baseman David Torres (.344, six homers, 32 RBIs, 22 runs), third baseman Reynaldo Guillen (.400, three homers, 35 RBIs, 41 runs, eight steals), outfielders Joseph Enea (.284, two homers, 23 RBIs, 26 runs, nine steals) and Jhoan Rodriguez (.307, five homers, 24 RBIs, and 18 runs), and pitcher Leurys Diaz ( 5-1, 46 strikeouts, .244 opposing batting average, 3.23 ERA) were also All-Region selections.
